The Type 45 Lotus Elan S3 drophead debuted in 1966 as well as the mid-engined Type 46 Europa road car. Initially the Europa was only sold on the mainland of Europe as an entry level sports car. It was badged "Europe and received considerable notice for its superb handling. Lotus also began development of the Type 47 Europa as a Lotus-Cosworth powered racing version. A new Type 41 Formula 2 & 3 car, a Type 42 & 42f Indianapolis car, a Type 43 Formula 1 car, and a Type 44 Formula 2 car were also launched in 1966.In the Indy 500, Jim Clark finished second in a Type 38 despite grip and steering issues.Another important advance debuted in 1967 with the Type 49 Formula 1 racer. It was the first car powered by the Cosworth-Ford DFV V8 engine which went on to rule the Formula 1 scene for a decade. With Jim Clark behind the wheel, the Type 49 won its very first race at the Dutch Grand Prix and took pole positions in the next eleven consecutive Grand Prix races.The Type 50 Lotus Elan +2 was launched as a more spacious version of the Lotus Elan with a larger chassis and brand new 2+2 bodywork which could seat two children in the back. A later version with a luxury specification, the Lotus Elan +25, would become the first-ever Lotus available only in fully-built form. The Type 48 Formula 2 car was also built in 1967. |
